Album art is a square that has to survive being 50 pixels wide in a streaming app and 30 centimetres wide on a sleeve. The ones that manage it are almost always one strong idea, held simply.
Think in genre grammar rather than in illustration. Ambient and electronic covers lean abstract, textural, often a single gradient or object. Rock and metal lean photographic and high-contrast. Hip-hop leans portrait. Jazz reissues lean flat colour blocks and grain. Say which lineage you are in, ask for the square shape explicitly, and keep the centre uncluttered — that is where a play button lands.

How to do it
- 1
Pick the square shape. Album art in any other proportion gets cropped by every platform.
- 2
Name the genre lineage and one central idea — an object, a texture, a portrait. Not three.
- 3
Ask for grain or print texture if you want it to feel physical. Clean digital gradients read as a placeholder.

Questions
- What size do streaming platforms want?
- Square, and large. Generate at the biggest quality tier in the square shape and you are above the usual 3000 pixel requirement.
- Can it add the artist name?
- Leave it out and set the type yourself. Lettering is the one thing image models still get wrong every time.
- Can I release music with it?
- Yes, the artwork is yours commercially. Distributors care about rights, and these are yours.
