Remove Background from an Image

Removing a background is the most common edit there is, and it comes in two flavours people constantly confuse: cutting the subject out onto a plain backdrop, and moving the subject somewhere else entirely. The second is harder and much more useful.

A cut-out is judged entirely at the edges — hair, fur, glass, motion blur. Ask for a clean plain backdrop and the edge quality is the whole job. But if you are replacing the background rather than deleting it, the edge stops mattering and the LIGHT starts: a subject lit from the left standing in a scene lit from the right is wrong in a way everybody feels and nobody can name. So say it — new background, and the light on the subject matched to it.

How to do it

  1. 1

Upload the image. Sharp edges in equals sharp edges out; a blurry phone shot cannot be cut cleanly by anything.

  2. 2

For a cut-out, ask for a plain white or grey studio backdrop and say to keep the subject untouched.

  3. 3

For a replacement, describe the new scene and ask for the light and shadow on the subject to match it.

Questions

Do I get a transparent PNG?
Not yet — you get the subject on a plain backdrop, which is what most uses need. Replacing the background outright is the better path here.
Does it handle hair and fur?
Well, if the source is sharp. Ask explicitly for clean edges around the hair and generate twice — the second one is usually better.
What does it cost?
0.15 € an image, and the first 2 are free with no card and no account.
