    What a HEIC file is

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the format iPhones and iPads save photos in by default since iOS 11, released in September 2017. According to Apple, it stores a photo in about half the space of a JPG at the same quality.

The catch is compatibility. Many Windows PCs, older Android phones, photo-printing kiosks, and most job, school and government upload forms only take JPG or PNG. Converting the HEIC to JPG gives you a file that opens everywhere.

How to convert HEIC to JPG

    1. 1

Tap “Drop your HEIC photos here” or drag the files onto it. On an iPhone, choose from Photos or Files; on a PC, from the folder you copied them to.

    2. 2

Keep JPG and 92 % quality — the difference with the original is not visible. Pick a smaller size if the file is going into an email or a form with a size limit.

    3. 3

Each photo converts on its own and shows its new size. Nothing is sent anywhere.

    4. 4

Download them one by one, all at once as a .zip, or on a phone use “Save to Photos” to put the JPGs straight back into your camera roll.

Your photos stay on your device

Most online converters upload your pictures to their server, convert them there and send them back. This one does not: the converter is loaded into the page and runs on your phone or computer. You can check it yourself — once the first photo has converted, switch on airplane mode and the next ones still convert.

The JPG does not carry over the original’s hidden metadata: no GPS location, no phone model. That is safer for anything you post or send to a stranger. If you need the date taken kept inside the file, keep the original HEIC too.

Stop your iPhone from saving HEIC

    1. 1

Open Settings › Camera › Formats and choose “Most Compatible”. New photos are saved as JPG from now on — they take roughly twice the space.

    2. 2

To get JPGs when you copy photos to a computer with a cable, open Settings › Photos › Transfer to Mac or PC and choose “Automatic”.

    3. 3

Photos you already took stay HEIC. Those are what this converter is for.

Open HEIC on Windows without converting

Windows 10 and 11 can show HEIC photos once two extensions are installed from the Microsoft Store: HEIF Image Extensions and HEVC Video Extensions (a small fee in most countries). That fixes viewing on your own PC — but websites and upload forms will still refuse the file, so converting is usually the faster fix.

    Questions

Is this HEIC to JPG converter free?
Yes, completely. The conversion runs on your own device, so a file costs us nothing — there is no account, no watermark, no daily limit and no paid tier for the converter.
Are my photos uploaded to a server?
No. The converter is code that runs in your browser. Your photos are read and written on your device and never sent to GenPix or anyone else. The page only counts how many photos were converted — never the photos or their names. The one exception is a photo you choose to send with “Edit in GenPix”.
Does converting HEIC to JPG lose quality?
JPG is a compressed format, but at the default 92 % the difference cannot be seen in a normal photo. Choose 100 %, or PNG, if you plan to edit the picture heavily.
Can I convert several HEIC files at once?
Yes. Select or drop as many as you want; they convert one after the other and you can download them all in a single .zip file.
Does it work on iPhone and Android?
Yes. On iPhone and iPad it works in Safari and Chrome; on Android in Chrome, Samsung Internet and Firefox. On a phone, “Save to Photos” puts the JPGs back into your gallery.
Is the date and location kept?
No. Hidden metadata such as GPS location, camera model and the date taken is not copied into the JPG. Keep the original HEIC if you need that information.
    What about Live Photos?
A Live Photo is a HEIC still plus a short video. The converter turns the still into a JPG; the moving part is a separate video file and is not included.
